I live in Portland, Oregon, and have been married to Linda since 1982.
I enjoy hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering, music (upright and electric bass), ballroom dancing, and travel. I grew up in a small town hardware store, so I love fixing things and can jury-rig just about anything.
My personal and professional interests often overlap in a joyful pursuit of my passions, such as volunteering in ministry where I can serve others and include a good smattering of my tech, handyman, and verbal/literary skills.

MA, Pastoral Studies, 2008
College of Idaho
BS, Zoology, 1980
My professional life shares three areas of focus: serving as web and production manager at DigitalScrapper.com, Civil Air Patrol chaplaincy, and assisting in ministry at The Oregon Community.
Business: I am a partner with my wife in FamilyHistoryHero.com, a web-based company that helps family historians deal with their boxes of photos, slides, and negatives from the 20th century and preserve the family stories for future generations. I serve the company as a very flexible generalist with a background in printing, publishing, web, video, audio, company finance, and the ability to troubleshoot just about anything.
Ministry: I have served in various expressions of pastoral ministry since 1994. My skills include preaching, teaching, disciplemaking, music, and pastoral counseling. In my role as a chaplain I serve as Deputy Chief of the Civil Air Patrol Chaplain Corps, have ongoing involvement with Civil Air Patrol cadets at the local squadron level, and maintain currency in emergency services (search and rescue, homeland security, and disaster response).

Chaplain Corps recruiting at Civil Air Patrol
September 2017 - Present
Civil Air Patrol is the auxiliary of the United States Air Force, and has three missions: Cadet Programs, Aerospace Education, and Emergency Services, which includes search & rescue (approx. 95% of Air Force assigned searches in the United States), disaster relief, homeland security, and counter drug missions.
I have served as a squadron chaplain, Oregon Wing Chaplain, Pacific Region Chaplain, Deputy Chief of the Chaplain Corps, and Chief of Chaplains. I currently serve in Chaplain Corps recruiting for CAP National Headquarters, as well as Professional Development Officer at Columbia Composite Squadron in Portland, Oregon.
I joined Civil Air Patrol in 2001, and have served as a CAP chaplain since 2004. I have a master rating as chaplain, a senior rating in Cadet Programs, and have achieved level 5 of the professional development program (Gill Robb Wilson Award #2497).
I have served as chaplain at National Cadet Competition, National Staff College (2x), have been chaplain at five cadet encampments, and was the 2011 escort to Israel for the International Air Cadet Exchange. I am currently ES rated for Mission Chaplain, Mission Staff Assistant, and Flightline Supervisor. I have also served as a rated Mission Observer.
I have been named Oregon Wing Chaplain of the Year, Pacific Region Staff Officer of the year, Pacific Region Squadron Chaplain of the Year, Pacific Region Senior Chaplain of the Year, and CAP National Squadron Chaplain of the Year.
Pastor at Large at The Oregon Community
The Oregon Community began on Easter Sunday, 2010, and gathers weekly at The Village Ballroom at 700 NE Dekum St in Portland, Oregon. Following in the footsteps of Jesus, we are committed to community, serving those around us, and a life of love, acceptance, and forgiveness. My focus at The Oregon Community is investing in the lives of our people so that they may grow into the full stature of Christ, and become mature leaders who will impact their world for God’s kingdom.
Marriage Coaching at MarriageTeam
2010 - Present
MarriageTeam matches couples who are looking for help (either pre-marital or already married) with coaches to help them develop a winning marriage. Linda and I work with couples in weekly sessions for eight to ten weeks. The skills couples learn through this process are very effective, and really do make a difference in marriages.
Assisting Minister at Eastside Foursquare Church
September 2007 - April 2010
I served as an assisting minister at Eastside as an ordained volunteer, where I developed a pathway for discipleship and started a small group program. I also assisted with publications and taught a mid-sized adult Bible fellowship.
Assisting Minister at Grace Foursquare Church: April 1999 - September 2007
I served as a paid staff member at Grace for two years starting in 1999, and again as an ordained volunteer staff member from 2002 to 2007. Roles included children’s ministry, preaching, leading a highly successful Adult Bible Fellowship mid-sized group, and small group ministry.
Senior Pastor at Grace Foursquare Church
September 1994 - March 1998
My family came to Grace Foursquare Church in 1989, and we became heavily involved in lay ministry and leadership. When the pastor left for a new ministry assignment I was selected to be the new senior pastor. This was a very valuable season for developing my preaching and teaching gifts, and learning how to lead an organization. After stepping down as senior pastor I took a leave of absence for a year, then returned to Grace as an assisting minister in 1999.
Owner at Windy Willow Press: August 1988 - April 1994
I started Windy Willow Press while I was still working for Horizon Air, and operated it for about six years prior to my transition into ministry in 1994. I focused on graphics and typesetting, and subbed out all presswork to a variety of sources depending on the need of the project. Clients included Sysco Food Services, where I did the majority of their office printing, Multnomah Publishers, and Harvest House Publishers. Windy Willow Press ran concurrently with my wife, Linda’s, most productive years as a best-selling Christian children’s author, which gave me an excellent extended background in printing and publishing. The skills I gained in graphics, typesetting, and print production have served me well in both business and ministry.
Prep Assistant at Graphic Arts Center
January 1990 - July 1990
GAC was the premier high-end printing company in the Portland area during the 1980s, and produced everything from top-drawer coffee table books to Victoria’s Secret catalogs and Fortune 500 annual reports. It was a difficult place to work, though, because of the “Dilbert’s Boss” prep department manager, so I only stayed six months. During that time I gained a lot of valuable skills and knowledge about print production. This was pre-Photoshop, so everything was still being done with traditional stripping, dot-etching, and platemaking. I did everything from bluelines to plate machine servicing to Chromalins and Match Prints.
General Airline Agent at Horizon Air
December 1985 - January 1990
At Horizon Air I served as a fueler (over-wing and single point), ground agent, passenger service agent, and operations agent. I especially enjoyed operations, but was finally compelled to find other opportunities that would better support a family of four.
