About Charlie Sattgast

I live in Portland, Oregon, and have been married to Linda since 1982.

I enjoy hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering, music (upright and electric bass), ballroom dancing, and travel. I grew up in a small town hardware store, so I love fixing things and can jury-rig just about anything.

My personal and professional interests often overlap in a joyful pursuit of my passions, such as volunteering in ministry where I can serve others and include a good smattering of my tech, handyman, and verbal/literary skills along the way.

Charlie Sattgast’s Term as Civil Air Patrol Chief of Chaplains: 2017-2019

Even though the CAP Chief of Chaplains is a volunteer position, the Chief of Chaplains serves as a full corporate director at Civil Air Patrol National Headquarters and oversees several national-level programs.

Charlie Sattgast chose to step down a year early from his term as Chief of Chaplains because his wife Linda suffered a heart attack in August of 2019 and needed Charlie’s full support at home.

Accomplishments during term as Chief of Chaplains

Chaplain, Colonel Charlie Sattgast directed a complete re-engineering of Civil Air Patrol’s cadet character development program in conjunction with the United States Air Force Academy’s Center for Character and Leadership Development. The new cadet character development program is based on virtue ethics and reaches over 26,000 cadets each month.

Chaplain Sattgast cultivated fruitful relationships with key influencers at the Air Force Chief of Chaplains office, and Chaplain Corps recruiters from the Air Force, Army, and Navy, and National Guard Bureau chaplaincy staffs. This resulted in the Air Force chaplain recruiters including information about CAP chaplaincy in their recruiting materials.

Charlie Sattgast engaged with federal chaplain endorsers to raise awareness of Civil Air Patrol chaplaincy, and worked with Jewish chaplaincy endorsers to significantly increase the number of Jewish chaplains in Civil Air Patrol.

Chaplain Charlie Sattgast also provided national staff with valuable insight and guidance to solve issues associated with the formation of squadrons in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and California that have a high percentage of Orthodox Jewish members. This included assisting members in obtaining religious accommodation waivers for wearing beards with uniforms, and providing guidance to national leadership to help ensure Jewish members who cannot participate in weekend activities may receive the required training to fully be part of fulfilling the three mandated missions of CAP.

Chaplain Sattgast laid the foundation for the development of national Chaplain Corps recruiting and mentoring processes in an effort to improve recruiting and retention of CAP chaplains and character development instructors to help fulfill the goal of having a Chaplain Corp member in each squadron.

As part of his duties, Chaplain Sattgast pursued innovative solutions to the chaplain and character development instructor application process, streamlining the administrative procedures to decrease the time required to process an application, thus helping units in their efforts to recruit chaplains and character development instructors, and improving the morale of those awaiting appointment.

During his tenure as Chief of Chaplains, Charlie Sattgast oversaw the revision and approval of the new CAP Chaplain Corps regulation, CAPR 80-1.

Chaplain Sattgast was awarded Civil Air Patrol’s highest service award, the Distinguished Service Medal, for his highly successful term as Chief of Chaplains.
